These groups consist of a maximum of 12 women between the ages of 30 – 45yrs old. These are productive women who have families and are in need of an income generating activity. The women start by building trust amongst them as we introduce them to the table banking system so as to build their financial discipline. We introduce them to basic agricultural practices that get them to improve their home meals and even allow them to generate some income by selling the surplus produce.
Through these self-help groups we train them on the importance of water harvesting, proper nutrition, health and sanitation and we build their capacity to achieve this in their own homesteads. These self-help groups are taught various skills that will prepare them to move to the entrepreneurial stage.
We realize that a push from local women can drive local community leaders to make a difference in the community’s healthcare facilities, water and sanitation and we work with the women groups to improve these facilities by incorporating local leaders and partnering with various health, water and sanitation industry stakeholders.
